Abstract

The global automotive industry is undergoing a paradigm shift toward electric mobility, driven by environmental concerns, regulatory pressures, and evolving consumer preferences. This study examines the comparative product planning strategies of BYD and Hyundai Motor Company, two prominent players with distinct approaches to electric vehicle (EV) development. Focusing on their strategic methodologies, development timelines, and market impacts, this study provides valuable insights into the dynamics of the rapidly expanding EV market. BYD has emerged as a leader in EV production through vertical integration and rapid innovation, with proprietary technologies such as the Blade Battery enabling cost-effective production and superior safety features. BYD’s accelerated product development cycles, often under three years, reflect its ability to swiftly adapt to market demands. In contrast, Hyundai’s approach emphasizes modular platform design, exemplified by its Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), allowing scalability and high-quality standards across its EV portfolio. The comparative analysis reveals that BYD’s agility and cost efficiency enable it to capture emerging market opportunities, while Hyundai’s focus on quality and sustainability secures its position in competitive, mature markets. This study concludes that integrating the agility of BYD with Hyundai’s meticulous quality assurance could serve as a model for optimizing EV product development.
