Design Innovation Through Artificial Intelligence in Textile and Fashion Manufacturing Companies
Abstract
The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is accelerating design innovation in the traditional textile and fashion industries, creating new possibilities across all stages of the supply chain. (1) Background/Purpose: This study examines how AI-driven design innovation is being implemented throughout the textile and fashion industries, with the aim of presenting the possibilities and strategic directions for AI utilization by textile and fashion manufacturing companies and proposing sustainable growth strategies centered on AI-human collaboration. (2) Methodology/Approach: A qualitative approach combining systematic literature review and in-depth case analysis was employed. Cases were selected across three industry streams—AI-based design and product development, AI in manufacturing processes, and AI in marketing and consumer experience—examining companies including Ribbed, Liberty Fabrics, Printful, Adidas, Gucci, Spoonflower, Zara, H&M, Patagonia, Eileen Fisher, Burberry, Anthropologie, UNIQLO, and Stitch Fix. Each case was analyzed in terms of AI application mechanisms, business outcomes, success factors, and challenges. (3) Findings: AI-based generative design automation systems assist designers' creative processes and enable data-driven product development. Smart factory systems and AI demand forecasting significantly improve supply chain efficiency and reduce waste. AI-based personalized recommendation and virtual try-on services enhance consumer experience and brand loyalty. Concurrently, concerns about overproduction, privacy, and accelerated fast fashion must be addressed. (4) Originality/Value: This study provides an integrated stream-based framework for AI application in textile and fashion design management, identifying key success factors and strategic directions for AI-human collaborative innovation toward sustainable growth.
